21 Best Money Blogs of 2010 | The Scientific Results

Print Friendly

Have you ever tried to quantify thing that are purely subjective?  Have you ever tried to find the best of the best?

  1. What’s the best book in the Bible?  Good question, but I’m not sure you’ll find an answer.
  2. Who sells the best pizza?  Hmmm.  It depends on your taste buds.
  3. What is the best personal finance software?  Well.  Do you prefer online or offline?  What are your password security conspiracy theories?

Sometimes it is difficult to find the best of the best.  But, that shouldn’t stop us from trying, right?

The Best Money Blogs of 2010

The Best of the Best Methodology

I think the best blogs are those that offer their readers the best quality throughout the year.  But, how does one know how that is done?

Every week there is a blog carnival called the Best of Money Carnival. Each week the carnival host sifts through 40-80 legitimate personal finance blog posts and determined his 10 favorite articles.  My theory is that the blogs/bloggers that are most frequently mentioned in the highest position of the Best of Money Carnival are deserving of the title The Best Money Blogs of 2010.

Here’s how I compiled these results:

  1. I reviewed the Best of Money winners from all the carnivals in the year.
  2. If an article was in the top five it earned credit.  The winner got 5 points.  Second place got 4 points, third gets 3, forth gets 2, and the fifth best article gets 1 point.
  3. If a carnival only named a top article and the rest were not categorized in order I gave the #1 article 5 points and the other nine entries got 2 points.

The project took a few hours, but I’m thankful to have the results …

My remarks and comments:

  • There is only one blog on this list that I don’t already subscribe to.  But, you can bet that by the time this posts I’ll be subscribing to Balance Junkie.
  • I’m amazed that four out of the top ten blogs are Christian personal finance blogs.  Why do you think that is?  If I’d included those blogs in a list I made up I’d probably be told it’s just because I have an affinity for Christian blogs.
  • I’m happy to see four of the Money Mavens blogs on this list (five if you include Ryan who writes Cash Money Life and The Military Wallet).  It makes me proud to be a member.

2009 vs. 2010 Best of Money Winners

Just for a point of comparison here’s a sample of the 2009 cumulative results (you can view all the results in the Best Blogs of 2009 post):

1 – Man Vs. Debt
2 – The Digerati Life
3 – Free Money Finance
4 – Budgets Are Sexy

5 – Wealth Pilgrim
6 – Frugally Green

7.  Darwin’s Finance
8 – Good Financial Cents
9 – Get Rich Slowly
10 – Cash Money Life
10 – Financial Highway

My remarks and comments:

  1. Where did Baker from Man vs. Debt go?  Interestingly he continues to make a significant impact to the personal finance community, but I guess his post frequency changed enough to impact his rankings.
  2. Where id Frugally Green go?  I didn’t come across that blog at all in any Best of Money Carnivals.
  3. Consistently near the top in both lists are The Digerati Life, Free Money Finance, and Wealth Pilgrim.  If you’re looking for new blogs to read this year you should check out these three blogs.

Are there any blogs that are missing from this list that you think should have been included?  What are some of your favorite personal finance blogs?

  1. says

Nice analysis! I only started submitting to this carnival about halfway through the year, so I hope quality writing will push me up next year! It’s quite an honor to be listed with some great blogs like these!

  2. says

Thank you! It’s interesting that you tallied the results based on the carnival. I do think a lot of outstanding blogs don’t join carnivals as they’ve got other things going on, perhaps? But I find this approach to ranking financial blogs unique as other rankings exist that use various other factors as well. I appreciate the coverage and will be sharing this with others! :)

  3. says

Thanks for including me! While I’m glad to have been included there is one problem with the methodology in choosing the top blogs. It includes only ones that have actually submitted to the “best of” carnival, so in theory there could be some pretty great blogs out there that maybe didn’t submit to the carnival this year. I think Baker might be an example of someone who didn’t submit as much? In any event, thanks for the mention!

  4. says

Thanks for including me on this list. It’s an honor to be mentioned in the same context as some of these other sites. I know there are a lot of other great blogs out there as well – it’s awesome to be part of such a great community. :)

      @Ryan, Peter, The Digerati Life

Glad to have all of you on the list.

Of course, this is not a fail proof method. One of my new favorite blogs – Punch Debt in the Face isn’t on the list and I was surprised Bargaineering wasn’t on the list. Anyhow, this was my best shot at getting a consensus on blogs that have consistently great content.

  5. says

The points raised here about this methodology only including those who enter the carnival are valid, but I’m sure no one would expect a ranking based on a single carnival to be comprehensive in the first place. There are probably also a lot of blogs (mine included) that didn’t enter this carnival every week.

Some of the larger blogs aren’t here, but it’s great for relatively new blogs to get a little attention now and then, and I’m certainly grateful to have it. Thanks for putting this together Craig, and thanks for subscribing to Balance Junkie! Congratulations to all of the great blogs who made the list – and to those who didn’t, but are still great blogs anyway! :)

    • says

      Balance Junkie,
Your point on methodology is exactly right. That’s why I laid it out so that everyone could know there is no perfect way to rank blogs. I’m guessing there will be a dozen posts with the “best” blogs and “best” blog posts. EVERYTHING in all the lists is subjective. I did my best to find a system that helps point out some blogs that consistently produce good quality material.

I look forward to reading more of your posts.

    To a successful 2011!

  7. says

I am honored to be included with all of these great blogs. It is an interesting observation that four of the top ten were Christian personal finance blogs. I don’t have a clue why, but it is interesting.

Thanks for taking “a few hours” to put this together.

    • says

I was hoping you’d have some great explanation, but I’ll have to settle for “I don’t have a clue”. I was rooting for your site as I was compiling the stats. Does that make my results void?

  8. says

“Have you ever tried to quantify things that are purely subjective?”
I’d go so far as to call it a hobby of mine. ;)

    Clever analysis and interesting results.

  9. says

Wow, interesting analysis! I would never have guesses those sites (including mine) were so frequently featured in the carnival. Thanks for putting this together.

    • says

As I went though the process I was amazed at some of the sites that kept emerging at the top of every list – I won’t say which sites :).

Do you have an overall up-to-date list of peonrsal finance oriented carnivals? I am familar with the Carnivals of Frugality, Personal Finance and Taxes but I am probably behind on some of the newer carnivals. Thanks!

Wow. I didn’t realize I’d made it that many times. Thanks for taking time to do this. Lots of good blogs here.

  11. says

I know almost all the blogs you mentioned and they are all great. But I don’t think an evaluation only based on carnivals is a good one. A lot of very popular and appreciated finance blogs just don’t submit to carnivals that much. I think your analysis is nice, I just don’t like the title that goes with it. It should be something like: The Best Money Carnival Blogs. Still great results though.

    • says

      Do Not Wait,
Agreed. Last year the title was the best of the best of money or something like that. Still, the post was just for fun not to crown any rulers over the personal finance world.

I’m posting a ntcioe to submit on my blog. One question and one idea:* How recent should our submitted posts be? Sometimes I’m reading someone’s archives and think it would be a great submission, but it was written, say, a year ago. Is it supposed to be current posts only?* Maybe you could create a button that people could post on their sites, both to remind them and to encourage new visitors. Oops —a0just saw you do have one under the Link to Us page. Maybe you could do a button code widget in your sidebar so everyone sees it automatically and can grab the code from there.
